‘Ohana is a 50’ Silini Catamaran built in 1997 by Mono and Multihull Boatbuilders of Holland

After months of research we set out on a buying trip taking us from Anacortes, Washington to West Palm Beach, Florida.  We found her waiting patiently in Palm Harbor Marina.

As with anything one buys used we quickly made our own changes and upgrades, one of which was finding a new name.

'Ohana is the Hawaiian word for “family”.  We spent several months on the Big Island of Hawaii and the name just seemed to fit.  Madison agreed since Lilo and Stitch was her favorite movie at the time!

The only catamaran built of it’s kind, ‘Ohana was just what we were looking for in size, function, and comfort for our family.

Her 3-cabin/2 head layout is very comfortable with a large settee in the living area to accommodate up to 8 people.  With a 27 foot beam, she is wide and spacious and her high bridge-deck allows for a smooth ride.  She also sports a little workshop with a pilotberth – great for extra crew!  Her  deep cockpit  gives us a little relief from the gals straying too far and into trouble.  As if that will stop them!

All of her systems are very simple and efficient.  So far we are producing what we use with the exception of fuel!  Her little 38hp engines can push us along at 6 to 7 knots without breaking a sweat.  She has a 70’ mast height with a very large full roach main sail.  A small jib on the foredeck, along with a cruising spinnaker, flushes out our sail plan.  There is a storm trysail which can be rigged in a pinch. We hope we never need to use it!

Although she may look tricky to sail she is really quite simple and well mannered.  Reefing the main sail is all done at the mast.  The jib is self- tacking and totally controlled from the cockpit.  The chute has a unique set up which allows the tack to be moved from port to starboard along her own track.  Say goodbye to spinnaker poles!

Overall, Catamaran ownership has many advantages over our previously owned monohull.  The best feature?  Elbow room!
